This five-day itinerary is for travellers who want to get out of the safari vehicle and experience the Rift Valley on foot as well as on game drives. Begin around Mount Longonot with a crater and ridge hiking programme, then move north toward Lake Elementaita and Soysambu Conservancy for private-conservancy wildlife, birding and wide-open scenery. It is a distinctive alternative to the Mara route and works especially well for active couples, small groups and travellers adding a short adventure before or after a longer safari.

Start early before the heat builds. Hike from the park entrance to the crater rim, with the option of extending around more of the rim depending on fitness, weather and guide assessment. Enjoy wide Rift Valley views and the dramatic forested crater before descending and returning to your lodge or camp.
After a relaxed breakfast, travel north toward Lake Elementaita and Soysambu Conservancy. Begin with an afternoon private-conservancy game drive through grassland and acacia woodland for giraffe, buffalo, antelope and birdlife, ending near the lake landscape at sunset.
Spend the day combining Soysambu wildlife with Lake Elementaita birding. Search for Nubian giraffe and plains wildlife, then devote time to pelicans, flamingos and other waterbirds around permitted viewing areas. Optional specialist activities are added only when pre-arranged with the conservancy.
Take a final early birding or game-drive session before breakfast, then drive back to Nairobi for your hotel or airport drop-off.
