Leave Nairobi and descend into the Great Rift Valley. Reach Lake Naivasha for lunch and a relaxed afternoon. Depending on the confirmed programme, take a boat trip for hippos and birdlife or enjoy lodge grounds and lakeside scenery before dinner.
6 Days Great Rift Valley Lakes & Hell's Gate Safari
An active Rift Valley journey through Naivasha, Hell's Gate, Elementaita, Nakuru and Bogoria, starting and ending in Nairobi.
Private Kenya journeys designed around your own people, pace and priorities.
This six-day private itinerary is designed around Kenya's Great Rift Valley rather than the traditional big-cat circuit. It combines freshwater Lake Naivasha with the walking and cycling landscapes of Hell's Gate, the birdlife of Lake Elementaita, rhino habitat at Lake Nakuru and the alkaline scenery of Lake Bogoria. The result is a varied route for travellers who enjoy birds, landscapes, light adventure and photography alongside conventional game drives.
Drive to Hell's Gate National Park for an active morning. Explore approved routes by bicycle, on foot with a guide or by vehicle, focusing on cliffs, volcanic formations and plains wildlife. Continue north to Lake Elementaita for a quieter evening overlooking the Rift Valley lake.
Begin with birding around Elementaita, where pelicans, flamingos and other waterbirds may be present depending on conditions. Continue to Lake Nakuru National Park, entering for an afternoon drive through woodland, lakeshore and open areas in search of rhino, buffalo, giraffe and birdlife.
Use a full day to explore Lake Nakuru's varied habitats, allowing enough time for rhino-focused game viewing, escarpment viewpoints and forested sections rather than treating the park as a quick transfer stop. Return to the selected lodge for dinner.
Travel north toward Lake Bogoria. The day focuses on the alkaline lake, Rift Valley escarpment and geothermal scenery. Flamingos can be spectacular when conditions are right, but numbers vary greatly, so the experience is planned around birding and landscape even when concentrations are modest.
After breakfast and a final scenic stop where practical, begin the drive back to Nairobi. Arrive in the afternoon for your hotel or airport drop-off.
